Dhaka stocks extended their losing streak to four sessions on Monday as uncertainty over possible changes to margin lending rules weighed on investor sentiment, adding to concerns over weaker corporate earnings amid prevailing domestic challenges.
The DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), fell 45.7 points to close at 5,814, compared with 5,860 points in the previous trading session.
The market remained under pressure from the start, though some sector-specific buying emerged mid-session following speculation over possible changes to margin lending rules, EBL Securities wrote in its post-closing market commentary.
However, buying interest faded as investors remained uncertain about the final decision, triggering broader sell-offs and panic-driven corrections, it added.
Market turnover declined 12 per cent to Tk990 crore from Tk1,130 crore in the previous session, reflecting cautious investor participation.
Textile stocks led trading activity, accounting for 21.3 per cent of turnover, followed by general insurance with 15.1 per cent and engineering with 11 per cent.
Most sectors posted negative returns, with mutual funds, textiles and information technology witnessing the highest corrections of 3.1 per cent, 3.1 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively.
Of the 395 issues traded on the DSE, 53 advanced, 312 declined and 30 remained unchanged.
The Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower, with its selected index CSCX losing 61.6 points and the All Share Price Index CASPI declining 111.2 points.
