The family of filmmaker Rob Reiner has issued its first public statement following the deaths of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, and the arrest of their son, Nick Reiner, in connection with the case.
Reiner’s other children, Jake and Romy Reiner, spoke of their grief in a joint statement released on Wednesday, describing the loss of their parents as devastating and unimaginable. They asked for compassion and restraint as the investigation continues.
“Words cannot begin to describe the pain we are living with every moment of the day,” the statement read. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents is something no one should ever have to endure. They were not only our parents, they were our closest friends.”
The siblings also expressed gratitude for the support they have received from across the world, while appealing for privacy. They urged the public to avoid speculation and instead remember Rob and Michele Reiner for their lives, their work and the love they shared with others.
The statement came on the same day that Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in court for the first time. He waived his right to enter a plea to two counts of first-degree murder and remains in custody without bail. Los Angeles police have accused him of fatally stabbing his parents at their home.
Rob Reiner, an acclaimed director and actor, and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles residence on Sunday. The county medical examiner later confirmed that both deaths were homicides caused by multiple sharp force injuries. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the evidence or a possible motive.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody shortly after the discovery and will remain held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles ahead of his next court hearing, scheduled for January 7.
As the case unfolds, the Reiner family has asked that the focus remain on mourning the loss of two lives, rather than on conjecture surrounding the ongoing legal process.
