Two children have died in separate incidents in Rangpur and Cumilla while showing symptoms consistent with measles, hospital sources confirmed on Sunday.
Health officials also reported new suspected cases in Rangpur division.
Rangpur
A child undergoing treatment with measles-like symptoms has died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The deceased, Zakir, aged 22 months, died at the hospital’s paediatric isolation ward around 8:00pm on Saturday, said ANM Tanvir Chowdhury, assistant professor of the Paediatrics department, on Sunday morning.
Hospital sources said Zakir, son of Sabuj Mia of Ulipur in Kurigram, was admitted to the hospital on the night of 30April with measles-like symptoms.
Meanwhile, sources at the office of the divisional health director said 49 new patients with symptoms consistent with measles were identified across Rangpur division in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning.
Of them, 30 patients were admitted to Dinajpur General Hospital and 19 to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, according to health officials.
Cumilla
A nine-month-old child has died of symptoms consistent with measles in Cumilla, bringing the number of similar child deaths in the district to six.
The deceased, Arosh, son of Abul Kalam of Tharapur village in Sadar South upazila, died around 8:30pm on Saturday at the measles isolation ward of Cumilla Medical College Hospital, said Meah Monjur Ahmed, head of the hospital’s Paediatrics department.
He said the child also suffered from pneumonia. He added that the condition worsened as family members brought him to the hospital late, allowing the infection to spread.
“With his physical condition deteriorating rapidly, the child died around 8:30pm on Saturday,” the physician said.
Hospital sources said six children with measles-like symptoms have died in Cumilla so far. Of them, three died in Dhaka and three died in Cumilla.
