After its Eid-ul-Fitr release, the romantic action thriller ‘Rakkhosh’ continues to gain strong momentum in theatres, emerging as one of the biggest surprises of the season. Audiences have been particularly impressed by Siam Ahmed’s transformed on-screen presence following the film’s long preparation phase.
The film began its journey at Star Cineplex with just 14 shows on Eid day. However, driven by audience demand, the number of screenings increased to over 20 within two days.
Initially, ‘Rakkhosh’ was released only in multiplexes, where ‘Domm’, starring Afran Nisho, led in terms of show count. It was followed by the star-studded ‘Bonolota Express’. Soon, ‘Bonolota Express’ overtook ‘Domm’ to claim the top spot in its second week. Now, in the third week, ‘Rakkhosh’, directed by Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, has surged ahead, taking a leading position and pushing ‘Domm’ down the rankings.
Across all branches of Star Cineplex, ‘Rakkhosh’ is currently running 11 shows per day, a number that will continue on April 4. At Lion Cinemas, the film is scheduled for four daily shows until April 9, while Jamuna Blockbuster is screening it three times daily. Additionally, Rajshahi’s Grand Riverview Cineplex and Sylhet’s Grand Movie Theater are each running three shows per day. In total, ‘Rakkhosh’ now has around 25 daily shows across multiplexes nationwide.
In contrast, ‘Domm’ is currently running 14 daily shows at Star Cineplex, with the same number scheduled for April 4. It is also screening three shows daily at both Lion Cinemas and Jamuna Blockbuster, bringing its total multiplex screenings to around 20 shows.
Meanwhile, ‘Rakkhosh’ has expanded into single-screen theatres from Friday. The film has opened in approximately 20 to 30 big halls across divisional and towns in its first phase. According to production and exhibitor sources, it is currently screening at venues including Ananda Cinema (Kuliarchar), Monihar Cinema and Monihar Cineplex (Jashore), Mom Inn and Madhuban (Bogura), Raj Tilak (Rajshahi), Sugandha (Chattogram), Madhumita, Ananda, and Shyamoli (Dhaka), Sainik Club (Dhaka), CineScope (Narayanganj), and Swapnil (Kushtia), among others. The number of halls is expected to double next week, said one of the film’s producers, Shahreen Akhter Sumi.
‘Rakkhosh’ is part of the Borbaad Universe. Alongside Siam Ahmed, the film stars Kolkata actress Sushmita Chatterjee, with Ali Raj, Sohel Mondol, and others in supporting roles. Bollywood actress Natalia Janoszek also appears in a special song.
Commenting on the film’s third-week performance, director Mehedi Hasan Hridoy said, “A good film eventually finds its audience. Initially, due to limited shows in multiplexes, many viewers couldn’t watch it despite interest. That demand still persists. Even in the third week, most shows are almost houseful. I believe the film will receive an even stronger response in single-screen theatres, as it contains all the elements those audiences enjoy.”
The film was shot across Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Mumbai, India. This marks the director’s second feature, following his debut Borbaad, which brought him into the spotlight.
