At least 140 people were injured after being bitten by a single dog across various villages in Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila between Thursday evening and Friday morning. The animal was eventually beaten to death by a group of residents on Friday morning.
The rampage began on Thursday evening, affecting people in the Pakundia municipality and surrounding villages. The attacks continued into Friday morning as the dog moved through Narandi and Norpur villages under the Narandi union.
Nur-e-Alam Khan, the Pakundia Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that between 50 and 60 individuals sought treatment at the upazila health complex on Thursday night alone.
“Primary treatment was provided, and those with serious injuries were referred to the Kishoreganj District Hospital,” he stated.
The health officer further noted that the hospital’s supply of vaccines had been exhausted due to the unprecedented number of victims, forcing many to purchase vaccines from external sources. He remarked that the facility had never previously encountered such a large influx of dog-bite patients at one time.
The ordeal concluded in the Sadhu Bari area of Shalanka village. Locals gathered to chase the dog, eventually cornering it and beating it to death with iron rods. According to local residents, approximately 20 more people were injured during this final confrontation with the animal.
Jalal Uddin, the Member of Parliament for the Kishoreganj-2 constituency, said he had directed relevant officials to take all necessary measures immediately after being informed of the situation. He added that he is personally monitoring the condition of the injured and has issued instructions to ensure the availability of medical treatment and vaccines for all victims.
