Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Sunday said the government is working to bring Qawmi madrasa education under a formal policy framework to modernise the system and align it with mainstream education.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a Ministry of Education session at the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

The minister said discussions have already been held with representatives of Qawmi madrasas to bring their education system to a level comparable with Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) standards.

He also noted that Deputy Commissioners have called for measures to ease the intense GPA-based competition that continues to put pressure on students and guardians.

Highlighting infrastructure challenges, Milon said the government has undertaken a project to build multipurpose examination halls in every upazila.

“Deputy Commissioners have pointed out the lack of playgrounds and examination facilities. We are addressing these issues,” he said.

He added that officials also reported declining student interest in attending school, stressing the need to create more engaging and student-friendly learning environments. The government’s “Learning with Joy” initiative aims to improve curriculum delivery and student participation.

The minister further said proposals such as mid-day meal programmes are already part of the government’s agenda.

He noted that 29 out of 46 proposed projects are being implemented within a 180-day priority period, many of which involve the Ministry of Education.

Describing the proposals from Deputy Commissioners as “important and timely,” the minister said similar recommendations had been made in the past but were not implemented, adding that the current government is committed to delivering on these reforms.
