Two cousin sisters drowned in an abandoned pond while playing near their home in Anwarkhali village under Pakundia paurashava in Kishoreganj on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Nusaiba Akter, 2, daughter of Siddiq Hossain, and Adiba Akter, 3, daughter of Siddiq’s sister Morium.
The incident took place around 9am.
Pakundia Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) SM Arifur Rahman confirmed the incident.
According to family members and locals, the two children fell into the nearby pond unnoticed while playing.
Family members later found them in the pond and rushed them to Pakundia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Tawhid, Residential Medical Officer of the health complex, said that both children had died from drowning before being brought to the hospital.
OC Arifur added police were sent to the scene and further action would be taken after speaking with the family.
