Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam officially assumed charge as the ninth Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) on Saturday.
His appointment was formalised through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division on 14 May, which appointed him to the post for a four-year term.
Professor Shahidul Islam, a distinguished faculty member of the Department of Marketing at the University of Dhaka, was appointed with the approval of the Honourable President of Bangladesh, who serves as the university’s Chancellor, according to press release.
According to the official notification, the new Vice-Chancellor will receive a salary, allowances, and other benefits equivalent to his current position, in accordance with existing rules.
Furthermore, as the university’s chief executive officer, he has been directed to remain present on campus on a full-time basis.
Upon assuming his duties, the newly appointed VC’s first official engagement was to pay tribute to Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani by placing a floral wreath at his mausoleum.
Subsequently, a handover ceremony was held at the university’s administrative building, where the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Md Anwarul Azim Akhand, formally transferred responsibilities to him. The two vice-chancellors marked the transition by exchanging floral greetings.
Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam was warmly received by the university community, including the journalists’ association, teachers, students, officers, and employees.
He also received congratulations from members of the proctorial body, students from various departments, and leaders and activists of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
