A 15-year-old Rohingya girl has been rescued in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, two days after she was allegedly abducted from a refugee camp, police said.
The 16 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) rescued the girl during an operation in West Hnila on Tuesday. A case has been filed against the alleged abductor under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
According to APBn, the girl, a resident of Leda camp, was allegedly abducted at around 1:30pm on 6 September by Sakibul Hasan, 20, a resident of Rangikhali Namarpara under Hnila union in Teknaf.
After receiving information about the alleged abduction, police launched an operation under the supervision of Camp-in-Charge Shahriar Bin Mannan. A team led by Leda APBn camp Sub-Inspector Shahin Hossain took part in the operation.
Acting on a tip-off, the team conducted a raid in West Hnila at around 1:45pm on Tuesday.
Police said Sakibul fled after sensing the presence of law enforcement personnel, leaving the girl at the scene. APBn members then rescued her.
16 APBn Commanding Officer Additional DIG Md Kawsar Sikder said law enforcement personnel began efforts to rescue the girl immediately after receiving information about the abduction.
“Acting on a tip-off, we conducted an operation and were able to rescue her safely two days after the abduction. Legal action has been taken over the incident,” he said.
He said the girl was sent to a local health complex for necessary treatment and medical examinations following her rescue.
She was later handed over to her father in accordance with a court order after completion of the legal procedures, he added.
Police said a kidnapping case had been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Operations are continuing to arrest the accused, who remains at large.
