President Mohammed Shahabuddin underwent an emergency angioplasty and successful stent implantation in the United Kingdom after doctors detected a major blockage in one of his heart arteries during a routine medical examination.
The President’s condition is now stable, according to his personal physician Colonel A K M Faizul Hoque, who is currently accompanying him in the UK.
He said doctors conducted an angiogram on the President on Tuesday afternoon at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge under the supervision of interventional cardiologist Dr Stephen Holley.
During the examination, physicians identified a significant blockage in one of the arteries of the President’s heart. Doctors immediately performed an angioplasty and implanted a stent successfully.
The President is now under close observation at the hospital.
He has sought prayers from the country’s people for his speedy recovery.
President Shahabuddin previously underwent open-heart surgery at the National University Hospital in Singapore in October 2023.
Since then, he has been receiving follow-up treatment at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for cardiac complications.
The hospital is internationally recognised for advanced cardiac treatment and research and is known as one of the institutions involved in the world’s first successful heart transplant.
The President travelled to London on 9 May for follow-up treatment and routine medical check-ups. He is expected to return home on 18 May after completing treatment.
