A 30-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a road accident in the Sajek union of Baghaichhari upazila, Rangamati, on Saturday morning.
The deceased, Sumanti Chakma, was an assistant teacher at Dab Adam Government Primary School. She was the wife of Swapan Chakma, a resident of the area.
According to local sources, Sumanti began experiencing labour pains on Saturday morning. She was being transported to Khagrachari Sadar General Hospital in a CNG-run autorickshaw when the accident occurred.
The collision took place between Nandaram and Pakujyachhari villages in Sajek when a vehicle belonging to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) hit the autorickshaw from behind. Sumanti Chakma died on the spot.
The autorickshaw driver, identified as Harendra Tripura, sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, in the crash.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amena Marjan confirmed she had been informed of the fatality. “I have heard about the death in the accident, but I have not yet received accurate information. I will provide further details after learning more,” she said.
