The government has taken up integrated plans, including construction of sustainable embankments, to protect coastal people from long‑term suffering caused by floods and tidal surges.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed made the comment around 11:30am Saturday while inaugurating the construction of 100 houses for flood‑affected families at Pekua upazila in Cox’s Bazar. The initiative has been organised by the Shamsul Haque Foundation.
He said, “As a government elected by the people’s vote, it is both our constitutional responsibility and political commitment to stand by citizens in any disaster.”
The minister added, “Our goal is not just immediate relief but ensuring permanent solutions to disasters. Guided by the principle ‘Bangladesh first, people before power,’ the government is working accordingly.”
On rehabilitation, Salahuddin said, “Support programmes have been taken not only for families who lost homes but also for farmers, fish cultivators, and livestock owners affected by floods. Those whose seedbeds, croplands, or saplings were damaged will receive fertilizer, seeds, and necessary agricultural inputs. Losses in the fisheries and livestock sectors will be surveyed, and assistance will be provided accordingly.”
He further said that initiatives will be taken to quickly repair flood‑damaged schools, colleges, madrasas, roads, and other infrastructure. “The government will always stand by the people and continue to work for improving living standards through just development and services,” he noted.
The government is following pro‑people and pro‑poor policies to ensure that ordinary citizens are not burdened with extra pressure and that state services reach their doorsteps.
After the ceremony, Salahuddin spoke with flood‑affected families, checked on their condition, and inspected distributed relief materials. He later visited different flood‑hit areas of Pekua to assess the damage.
The minister reached Cox’s Bazar on Friday for a two‑day visit. On the first day, he visited flood‑affected areas in Chakaria and distributed relief among victims.
