The government will begin rehabilitation initiatives in flood-affected areas across the country after completing ongoing damage assessments, while continuing relief assistance for affected communities, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Friday.
Speaking after distributing relief among flood victims in Fasiakhali area of Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar, he said survey teams are assessing the extent of the damage caused by the recent floods to determine the support and reconstruction measures required.
“The BNP is a people’s government and will always stand by the people. The government is fully prepared to respond to natural disasters. Surveys are underway in the flood-affected areas, and assistance to affected people will continue through both government and private initiatives based on the assessment,” he said.
The home minister said rehabilitation work would begin once the surveys are completed, covering damaged roads, educational institutions, embankments and other public infrastructure.
He also said the government would provide necessary assistance to farmers affected by the floods to help them resume agricultural activities and return to normal life as quickly as possible.
After the relief distribution programme, Salahuddin visited Charakul area of Chakaria to inspect flood-damaged embankments, roads and residential houses.
During the visit, he spoke with affected residents, heard their accounts of the damage and directed the local administration to take prompt and effective measures to address their hardships.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, the Chakaria upazila nirbahi officer and other local administration officials accompanied the adviser during the visit.
