An auto-rickshaw driver and a passenger were killed in a road accident in the Sannasivita area of Nalitabari upazila on the Sherpur-Nalitabari road on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Kamrul Hossain, 40, an auto-rickshaw driver and son of Ekdil Hossain from Baghaber Khoriapara village, and Shahidul Islam, 40, son of Abdus Sattar from the Salehabad Krishnapatti area.
Police and local residents reported that Shahidul Islam arrived in Nalitabari town from Dhaka at approximately 2:30am. He subsequently hired Kamrul Hossain’s auto-rickshaw to travel to his father-in-law’s residence in Panchgaon Sagardi Krishnapatti.
The accident occurred when the vehicle reached the Sannasivita area. Local people discovered the mangled auto-rickshaw and the two bodies lying near a sand pile by the road and alerted the authorities. Police later recovered the bodies from the scene.
Nalitabari Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Abdul Hannan said they are currently investigating the cause of the accident. He added that the legal procedures for handing over the bodies to the respective families are ongoing.
