Electricity production resumed at the first unit of Dinajpur’s Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant on Friday after a six‑day shutdown.
Chief Engineer Md Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed the development around 10pm, saying the 125MW unit was restarted in the afternoon and began supplying power to the national grid at about 8:30pm.
Officials said the unit is currently adding 60–65MW to the grid. Production had been halted on April 25 after a boiler pipe burst.
The 525MW plant, launched in 2006 to use coal from the Barapukuria mine, initially operated two 125MW units, with a 275MW unit added in 2017. Mechanical faults, however, have prevented it from consistently running at full capacity.
Assistant Chief Engineer Mohsinul Firoz said repair work on the second and third units is ongoing, with overhauling of unit‑3 in progress. The Chinese contractor has assured that unit‑3 will resume generation by May 15, which is expected to improve supply.
Past mechanical failures and boiler blockages have repeatedly disrupted production, affecting electricity supply across eight northern districts including Dinajpur.
