The Election Commission has suspended the registration process for postal voting by Bangladeshi expatriates in seven countries.
The seven countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A press release signed by Ruhul Amin Mollik, Director (Public Relations) and Information Officer of the EC, was issued in this regard on Thursday.
He said the registration was suspended because voters did not submit complete and accurate addresses, which are essential for the successful dispatch of ballot papers through the postal voting system.
The EC will issue further instructions later, he noted.
This initiative marks a historic step, as it is the first time Bangladeshi citizens living abroad will be able to participate in the upcoming national election and referendum via postal ballots.
According to the latest data available on the EC’s website, a total of 53,096 overseas voters had successfully completed their registration via the “Postal Vote BD” app as of 1pm on Thursday.
