Police obstructed a march by eight political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, that was organised to press a three-point demand implementation of the July Charter and holding a referendum before the upcoming national election.
The procession came to a halt on Thursday morning in front of Matsya Bhaban as participants were marching from Dhaka’s Paltan intersection toward the state guest house Jamuna to submit a memorandum to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Earlier in the day, leaders and activists of the parties began their procession from Dhaka’s Paltan intersection to submit the memorandum to the Chief Adviser at his Jamuna residence.
The march, led by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, started gathering at Paltan around 9:30 am, with leaders and supporters from different thanas and wards of Dhaka South carrying banners and festoons.
Activists from other Islamist parties also joined the gathering at Paltan.
Their demands include holding the referendum within this month, ending political harassment and arrests during the interim government period, ensuring equal opportunities for all parties in the upcoming election, and safeguarding freedom of religion and political activities.
After the rally, the procession began marching toward Jamuna around noon to submit the memorandum to the Chief Adviser.
The participating parties are Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Khelafat Majlish, Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA), and Bangladesh Development Party.
Meanwhile, additional police forces were deployed in the Paltan area to prevent any untoward incident.
