BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the party’s National Standing Committee has given its Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman the responsibility to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
“The Standing Committee has entrusted the prime minister and BNP chairman to take the necessary decisions regarding the presidential election and nominate the party’s candidate,” Fakhrul told reporters after the meeting on Saturday.
The committee met at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan from 8pm to 9:30pm, with Tarique presiding. Members discussed the overall political situation, local government elections, and party matters, BSS reports.
BNP Standing Committee Member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the Speaker is currently serving as acting president and, under law, the presidential election must be completed within 90 days.
He added that the Election Commission has confirmed its readiness to conduct the vote, and once the schedule is announced, the BNP chairman will finalise the party’s nominee.
Salahuddin also said preparations are underway to hold local government elections by the end of this year or early next year.
Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Begum Selima Rahman, and AZM Zahid Hossain were present at the event.
