Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday announced an Eid gift of Tk5,000 for each cleaner employed by the country’s 12 city corporations.
He handed over cheques to Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain and administrators of other city corporations at his office at the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat around 3:30pm, according to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.
“The prime minister handed over cheques of Tk5,000 for each cleaner through the respective mayors and administrators of the 12 city corporations,” Rumon said.
He said the financial support was provided to show respect and solidarity with sanitation workers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“Sanitation workers play a vital role in keeping the country’s cities clean and liveable. The initiative recognises their tireless efforts,” he said.
Rumon expressed hope the support would bring additional joy to the families of cleaners during Eid.
He also said the government will continue humanitarian and welfare initiatives for urban service workers in the future.
Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shah Alam, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain and administrators of other city corporations were present at the cheque handover ceremony.
