Sajid Shahriar Sanam, 24, a student of Chittagong University (CU) who went missing after being swept away by the current upon entering Karnaphuli River in Kaptai, Rangamati, has been recovered dead.
His body was recovered at around 4:40pm on Sunday from Patharghata area of Sitar Ghat in the upazila.
Confirming the death, Kaptai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said, “His dead body was recovered around 4:40pm.”
He further said, “Diving teams from the Navy and Fire Service were working on the rescue. Later, around 4:40pm, the missing student’s body was recovered.”
Sanam was a final-year undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chittagong University. He was the son of Nasir Uddin from Raipura Upazila in Narsingdi District.
It is learned that a nine-member tourist group coming from Narsingdi and Dhaka reached Kaptai at around 10am on Sunday.
They went trekking on Sitar Pahar with a local guide. After finishing the trek and descending from the hill, they entered Karnaphuli River in Patharghata area of Sitar Ghat to wash their hands and face.
At around 1:40pm, Sanam was swept into deep water by the current.
