Jatiya Sangsad on Monday passed the supplementary budget of Tk 56,117 crore for 2025-26 fiscal year to meet the additional expenditures of various ministries and divisions.
The supplementary budget was passed through the Appropriation (Supplementary) Bill, 2026, allowing the government to spend the amount from the consolidated fund for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2026.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury moved the bill, which was passed by voice vote.
The original budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year was Tk7,90,000 crore allocated across 62 ministries and divisions. Following various adjustments in expenditures, the size of the revised budget for the current fiscal year now stands at Tk7,88,000 crore.
According to the sources, 27 ministries, divisions, and institutions saw an increase in their allocations totalling Tk 56,117.59 crore, while the allocations for 35 ministries and divisions were reduced by Tk 59,348.67 crore.
Khosru had earlier placed the supplementary budget in Parliament on 11 June. Before the bill’s final passage on Monday, 25 demands for grants were placed by the respective ministers and state ministers and were subsequently passed.
A total of 304 cut motions were moved by 20 opposition members.
Discussions were held on the demands for grants concerning the Finance Division, Planning Division, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Science and Technology, Local Government Division, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Food, and the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The opposition members who participated in the discussion included Shahjahan Chowdhury (Chattogram-15), Md Abdul Gafur (Kushtia-2), Md Kamrul Hasan (Mymensingh-6), Mohammad Najibur Rahman (Pabna-1), GM Nazrul Islam (Satkhira-4), Md Abdul Alim (Bagerhat-4), Md Mujibur Rahman (Rajshahi-1), Al-Faruk Abdul Latif (Nilphamari-2), Md Amir Hamza (Kushtia-3), Md Abdul Bari Sardar (Rajshahi-4), Md Masud Parvez (Chuadanga-1), Md Ruhul Amin (Chuadanga-2), Sheikh Monjurul Haq (Rahad) (Bagerhat-2) from Jamaat-e-Islami, Akhter Hossain (Rangpur-4) of NCP, Mohammad Abul Hasan of Khelafat Majlish, and independent member Begum Rumeen Farhana (Brahmanbaria-2).
However, all cut motions were rejected by voice vote.
Sector-wise allocations
The Finance Division received the highest supplementary allocation of Tk28,655.54 crore, followed by the Planning Division with Tk12,407.83 crore.
The Ministry of Science and Technology received the third-highest allocation of Tk4,923.48 crore, while the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Local Government were allocated Tk 2,177.04 crore and Tk 1,809.56 crore respectively.
