254 detained in fresh juvenile gang crackdown in Cumilla

Police carried out another operation against juvenile gangs and unruly youths, detaining 254 people across 18 police stations in Cumilla.

Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfor Rahman confirmed the arrests on Sunday morning.

Police said the drive, conducted from Saturday night until early Sunday, targeted teenage hangouts and crime‑prone areas in the city and other parts of the district.

Senior district police officials also took part directly in the operation.

Authorities said that the detainees are being scrutinised to determine involvement in criminal activities. Those found linked to offences will face legal action, while others will be released after verification.

Police told media that among those detained were four active members of Cumilla city’s notorious “Ratan Group” or “R Squad.” One of them, Anisur Rahman alias Anik, 19, has been identified as the gang’s second‑in‑command.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, police carried out a similar coordinated operation across the district, detaining 624 people. Of them, 451 teenagers were released to their guardians.

The crackdown follows widespread concern over juvenile gang activity and rising youth crime in Cumilla after the recent Apratim murder.

Since then, police surveillance and raids have intensified at known gathering spots and high‑risk areas.

District police say such operations will continue to keep teenagers away from crime and curb the influence of juvenile gangs.
