Spanish businesses are exploring trade and investment opportunities in Bangladesh across eight sectors, with the Madrid Chamber of Commerce planning to send a high-level business delegation to the country by November.
Business leaders and entrepreneurs identified textiles, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, renewable energy, agribusiness, information technology, logistics and consumer goods as potential areas for investment at a seminar in Madrid on Thursday.
Madrid Chamber of Commerce President Ángel Asensio said trade between Bangladesh and the European Union reached around €23.3 billion in 2025.
He also pointed to an estimated $172 billion in green investment opportunities in Bangladesh during 2018-30, covering green buildings, transport, climate-smart agriculture, infrastructure and waste management.
Export diversification remains both a challenge and an opportunity for Bangladesh, Asensio said.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Administrator Md Fazlul Hoque said plans were under consideration to offer incentives, including free land for investors in renewable energy, logistics and infrastructure. The government would purchase electricity from such projects at predetermined prices, he added.
Hoque acknowledged challenges in doing business in Bangladesh and invited the Madrid Chamber to send a business delegation to the country. Asensio said a high-level delegation was planning to visit by November.
The Madrid Chamber organised the seminar, titled “Bangladesh: A Strategic Partner in the Global Economy”, with Bangladesh Ambassador to Spain Md Masudur Rahman among the attendees.
Representatives from EuroCham Bangladesh, Molins, Recover Global, Invest Bangladesh and the Export Promotion Bureau participated alongside Bangladeshi and Spanish businesses, which also held a business-to-business networking session.
The event was part of an 11-day European tour by a 26-member FBCCI business delegation led by Hoque. The delegation left Bangladesh on 23 September to pursue trade, industrial links and foreign direct investment.
