OpenAI (the mother company of ChatGPT and Dall-E) has acquired personal finance startup Hiro Finance. Personal finance is described as the management of the income, assets, and liabilities of an individual or family. Hiro Finance founder, Ethan Bloch, announced on Monday, and OpenAI confirmed at a press conference. The startup was backed by A-list fintech VC firm Ribbit, as well as General Catalyst and Restive.
The terms of acquisition were not disclosed, nor is it known how much money was raised. Hiro tends to shut down its operations on April 20 and delete all data from their servers on May 13. Bloch also said that around 10 employees of Hiro are joining him after being acquired by OpenAI. Although it is still unclear whether that is the exact number of employees.
Founded in 2024, Hiro launched its AI tool at the end of 2025. It offered AI-powered financial planning for consumers. Users entered financial information like salary, debts, and monthly costs, and the app modelled different what-if scenarios in order to aid with creating financial decisions.
According to Bloch, Hiro was specifically trained to nail financial math, including an option that allowed users to verify accuracy. Over the past couple of years, state-of-the-art frontier models have gotten significantly better at math of all kinds.
Hiro is another successful project of Bloch. In 2021, Oportun bought its first neobank, Digit, which allowed people to save money automatically. It was priced at more than $200 million. A bit of fun fact: Hiro is Bloch’s 15th project as he started as a tech entrepreneur at 13-years of age. The first 13 failed and sold Flowtown (his 14th project) in 2009 for $4.5 million.
OpenAI is on the run to buy various AI businesses to help them grow. ChatGPT is marketed as a great tool for business finance teams. We can see why the model maker would be looking to add more talent to this side of the house. It is a matter of time on whether OpenAI plans to pursue financial planning as a more specialised app.
OpenAI has acquired Hiro Finance, signalling a strategic move into AI-driven financial planning. By integrating Hiro’s expertise, the company strengthens its position in business and finance tools, highlighting the growing demand for intelligent, data-driven decision-making solutions in both consumer and enterprise finance sectors.
