A 55-year-old businessman, Abdur Rahman, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Shyam Bazar, Sutrapur, Old Dhaka on Thursday.
He was a former president of the Shyam Bazar Fresh Market Owners’ Association.
Sutrapur police officer-in-charge, Md Matiur Rahman, confirmed the incident.
He said the shooting took place around noon in front of Maula Buksh Sardar Charitable Eye Hospital.
Passersby rushed the critically injured Rahman to the emergency department of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The officer added that Abdur Rahman was a turmeric merchant by profession.
“We are investigating the case. The identity of the attackers is not yet known,” he said.
