The Speaker has dismissed opposition MP Shafiqul Islam Masud’s attempt to raise three issues on a point of order, including the health condition of BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, saying the time of the National Parliament cannot be wasted on rumours and sub judice matters.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad stated on Tuesday that these are not matters for a point of order.
The Speaker said Mirza Abbas has informed the Parliament Secretariat about his health condition through a letter. “His condition is continuously improving, and he will join parliament in due course after recovering,” he said.
Regarding rumours, the Speaker said the time of parliament cannot be wasted on who said what or what is meant about whom. “Matters which are sub judice will be informed after the court’s decision,” he added.
“If any constitutional or legal decision is taken regarding anyone’s membership of parliament, the House will be informed in due course,” he said, advising members to speak on ongoing and parliament-related matters when raising points of order.
Earlier, opposition MP Shafiqul Islam Masud said Mirza Abbas is a senior politician and experienced MP, and parliament should be informed about his health condition, oath-taking situation, and when he will join.
He also raised questions about the current status of allegations of loan default and legal cases against two ruling party MPs, and sought clarity on their role in parliamentary activities.
The Jamaat MP also mentioned recent rumours and statements, including remarks by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the trial-related discussions regarding Osman Hadi, calling for explanations from the government.
Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam said there is no scope to discuss sub judice matters and rumours in parliament. “Everyone must remain vigilant to ensure that valuable parliamentary time is not wasted on irrelevant matters under the guise of points of order,” he said.
