BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said there will be no opportunity for nepotism in teacher recruitment at Thakurgaon University.

“We are under pressure, both on me and on the vice-chancellor. This must not be allowed, and we will not allow it. No form of nepotism should exist in the recruitment of teachers or other posts. Only qualified and meritorious candidates will serve as teachers here. This is not a charitable medical centre,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks on Friday morning while speaking at the inauguration of the temporary office of Thakurgaon University.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul said the proposal to establish the university was submitted to him before the election. Work has since moved forward quickly. He said the vice-chancellor has already been appointed and some financial allocations have also been made. He added that several sites have been visited for the permanent campus.

“We do not want to destroy agricultural land. This is a major issue in the country. Big thinking is needed for big work. We have moved quickly on the university with that mindset,” he said.

The minster called for building the university as an international standard institution. “We must always remember that a university means a world-class education institution. We must keep pace with the world,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul added that the institution belongs to the people. “We are old in age, but our dream and aspiration is that it will one day become a central university. The most talented people will work here. There will be no political interference. Correct decisions must be taken. Everyone will support you. This is a matter of pride for Thakurgaon,” he said. He also urged journalists to publish positive news.

State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad, Vice-Chancellor Israfil Shaheen, government officials, political leaders and other dignitaries were present at the event.
