BNP Election Steering Committee Chief Coordinator Abdus Salam said there is no alternative to the BNP at this moment to protect the country, democracy and religious freedom.
He said a group is secretly plotting to keep the BNP in power temporarily and later seize power again through movements, a plan he described as extremely dangerous for the country.
He made the remarks on Sunday at an exchange meeting with Islamic scholars at the Dhaka-17 constituency election office in Banani.
Abdus Salam said those who use Islam in politics have never truly stood for Islam, alleging that in the past they compromised across the border and were also accused of maintaining secret understandings with various international forces.
Referring to the upcoming election, he said it is not only crucial for the BNP but also for the freedom of ordinary people, religious practice and the future of the country.
He said the election will determine whether the country remains independent or is sold off.
Alleging that a section is deliberately spreading propaganda against Tarique Rahman, he said Tarique Rahman himself instructed after 5 August that there must be no retaliatory attacks, arson or disorder, which he described as the hallmark of a true leader.
Referring to Awami League–Jamaat relations, he said those who previously joined hands with the Awami League to remove the BNP from power are still involved in the same conspiracy alongside Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.
Drawing an example from university politics, he said there is ideological similarity between Chhatra League and Shibir, which, he said, the public must understand.
BNP Chairperson Adviser Nazimuddin Alam and several Islamic scholars were present at the meeting.
