Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has secured the top global position for artificial intelligence degrees in the 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, published by ShanghaiRanking.

Securing the pinnacle position with a score of 289 points in rankings, NTU narrowly surpassed China’s Tsinghua University, which followed closely behind, according to a report of VN Express.

The annual assessment evaluated roughly 2,000 universities across 100 countries and regions. From this extensive pool, 400 institutions were specifically ranked for their AI programmes, all having published a minimum of 100 scientific papers in the field between 2020 and 2024.

A deeper look into the top 20 highlights China’s formidable presence, hosting ten institutions — two within the top ten and the remaining eight occupying places 11 through 20. United States follows with four ranked universities, while Canada claims three. Singapore, Australia, and United Kingdom each have a single representative in this list.

The ranking methodology rests on five core pillars: the calibre of faculty, volume of high-quality research, overall research quality, the impact of that research, and the extent of international collaboration.

The ShanghaiRanking, also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, was founded in 2003 by China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

It is widely regarded as one of the three most influential global university rankings, sharing this prestige with the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE) world university rankings.
