Filmmaker Niamul Mukta has made the feature film ‘Poth’, inspired by the life and artistic journey of a theatre practitioner, with playwright, actor and cultural figure Asaduzzaman Dulal in the lead role.
The film follows the story of a theatre artist who carries theatre on his shoulders and traces the path of his dramatic and personal journey. Mukta has written the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film in addition to directing it. He has also produced the project under the banner of Chilekotha Films.
Asaduzzaman Dulal, a theatre practitioner from Pabna, has been involved in theatre for more than three decades. He writes, directs and performs in stage productions and was previously associated with Mamunur Rashid’s Mukta Natak (Liberated Theatre). He also leads a local theatre troupe called Samannoy Theatre and regularly stages productions in different parts of the country.
Explaining the casting choice, Mukta said, “I was looking for someone in real life who works with local theatre. My home is also in Pabna, so I had known Dulal Bhai for some time. I found an extraordinary similarity between him and the character in my story.”
‘Poth’ recently received certification from the Bangladesh Film Certification Board. Mukta said the team is preparing to submit the film to several international film festivals before planning a theatrical release in Bangladesh later this year.
The filmmaker has not yet disclosed the names of the other cast members appearing alongside Dulal.
Meanwhile, Mukta has completed shooting another film titled ‘Baidya’, which stars Mosharraf Karim in the central role. He said the film will be submitted to the censors soon.
