All 296 newly elected members of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) will take oath at the Parliament on Tuesday morning.
According to a press release from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, the lawmakers will first be sworn in as Members of Parliament (MPs) and then as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin is expected to administer the oath at the Oath Room of the Sangsad Bhaban at 10am, while Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani will conduct the ceremony.
BNP lawmakers, including party Chairman Tarique Rahman, will take oath first, followed by members from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlish, Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Ganosamhati Andolon, and independent MPs.
Official results show BNP secured 209 seats, while its allies Gano Odhikar Parishad and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) won one seat each, and Ganosamhati Andolon also won one. Jamaat emerged as the main opposition with 68 seats, while its partners NCP won six, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis two, and Khelafat Majlish one. Islami Andolon Bangladesh won one seat, and independents claimed seven constituencies.
On Friday night, the Election Commission published the gazette for 297 out of 299 constituencies. Results for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 were withheld due to legal issues, while voting in Sherpur-3 was postponed following the death of a Jamaat candidate.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet members at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad in the afternoon. Secretary Kaniz Maula said, “The Parliament Secretariat is set to hold the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet at 4pm tomorrow.”
Preparations have been underway since Saturday, two days after the polls. Breaking tradition, the swearing-in of the new government will take place at the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex instead of Bangabhaban.
As per parliamentary rules, following the MPs’ swearing-in, the BNP Parliamentary Board will meet to elect its leader. The leader of the House will then inform the President that the party commands an absolute majority, formally seeking appointment as Prime Minister.
The President will subsequently appoint BNP Chief Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister, who will then select cabinet colleagues. The Prime Minister will be sworn in first, followed by ministers, state ministers, and deputy ministers.
