Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held separate meetings with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath in New York on Monday, discussing multilateral cooperation, climate challenges, and bilateral ties.
During his meeting with Khalilur, Minister Khanal congratulated him on his election as president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and conveyed best wishes for a successful tenure, reports The Kathmandu Post.
He also assured Nepal’s full support and cooperation throughout Khalilur’s term.
The two leaders discussed the priorities of the General Assembly presidency and emphasised the importance of strengthening multilateralism with the United Nations at its core. They also exchanged views on the impact and damage caused by the recent climate-related disaster in Nepal.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Khanal separately met Herath, Sri Lanka’s minister for foreign affairs, foreign employment and tourism.
During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed Nepal-Sri Lanka relations and discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation. Khanal expressed gratitude to the Sri Lankan government and people for their economic and humanitarian assistance.
The ministers also exchanged views on various aspects of the longstanding friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.
They underscored the need to convene meetings of existing bilateral mechanisms and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, tourism, education, culture, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.
