National Citizen Party (NCP) has filed a complaint with Habiganj Sadar Police Station over Tuesday’s attack on its leaders and activists in the district.
Tanmoy Tanvir, convener of Jubo Shakti, the youth wing of the NCP, filed the complaint against 11 people, including Habiganj district Chhatra Dal President Shah Rajib Ahmed Ringon, at the Kamai Chhara police camp in Bahubal upazila on Wednesday night in the presence of Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tareq Mahmud.
NCP leaders submitted the complaint after reaching the police outpost despite facing several obstacles, including four police barricades, a sand-laden truck and other vehicle barriers, according to party sources.
Earlier, the NCP leaders attempted to go to Habiganj Sadar Police Station to file a case over the alleged attack on their colleagues.
However, police stopped them citing security concerns, after which they went to the police outpost to submit the complaint.
The development came after NCP leaders faced repeated obstruction while travelling from Moulvibazar to Habiganj to attend a protest programme.
On Wednesday afternoon, police stopped their convoy at Cha-Kanya area in Sreemangal. Although the leaders crossed the barricade and continued their journey, they were stopped again at Muchai area in Bahubal upazila.
The NCP leaders later sat on the road in protest. They remained there until Wednesday night, demanding action over the alleged attack.
Habiganj SP Mohammad Tareq Mahmud said Section 144 had been imposed in the district and the NCP leaders were stopped as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
According to police and NCP sources, NCP leaders were returning to Moulvibazar after attending a “July March” programme in Habiganj on Tuesday when they were allegedly attacked by BNP and Chhatra Dal activists.
Following the incident, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, northern region chief organiser Sarjis Alam and several other leaders stayed overnight at the Moulvibazar Circuit House.
On Wednesday morning, NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, along with other central leaders, arrived in Moulvibazar from Dhaka. They later left for Habiganj around 4pm to join a protest rally organised by the party.
The Habiganj district administration had earlier imposed Section 144 in the city after both the NCP and Chhatra Dal announced separate protest programmes at the same venue.
Meanwhile, BNP and its affiliated organisations’ leaders and activists reportedly took positions at different locations, including Shaistaganj and Mirpur, to prevent the NCP leaders from entering Habiganj.
Police said they intervened to avoid any possible confrontation.
Moulvibazar SP Mohammad Monirul Islam said police had attempted to stop the NCP leaders at Cha-Kanya area in Sreemangal to prevent any major incident.
He said BNP and its affiliated organisations had taken positions near the Habiganj border, and police intervened to prevent deterioration of the law and order situation.
The NCP leaders, however, continued towards Habiganj despite the police obstruction.
