Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has stated that the fight against reform, corruption, and hegemony in Bangladesh is not yet over. In the new Bangladesh, the NCP and the fallen fascist Awami League cannot coexist under any circumstances.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at an Iftar gathering organised by NCP’s Chattogram division at The King of Chittagong Convention Center on Monday afternoon.
Nahid Islam said that after 5 August, many evil forces worked to suppress the strength of the youth, but with the cooperation of the people, the NCP has entered the national parliament with 6 seats today. He expressed determination to continue the struggle from the streets within the parliament as well.
Addressing leaders and activists regarding preparations for the local government elections, Nahid Islam said that it was not possible to retain all the votes received by the 11-party alliance in the national election. He instructed leaders and activists to start preparing for the local government elections from now to re-prove this public support.
Writs have been filed in court challenging the July Charter and the referendum verdict, which emerged as the people’s political expression after the mass uprising. Regarding this, Nahid Islam said that if the court is used again to implement a partisan agenda, its consequences will be as dire as that of the Awami League. He demanded the swift implementation of the popular referendum verdict.
Referring to Chittagong as the “holy city of saints and Sufis”, Nahid Islam called for building strong resistance against any form of occupation and extortion. He said that in any district where the NCP is present, Awami League will not be allowed to run any office or programme.
Criticising the current government’s foreign policy, he said that the message issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was “submissive”. He questioned whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was playing such a role to protect the interests of any superpower.
Also speaking at the event were NCP Southern Region Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Coordinator Akhter Hossen, Senior Joint Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud, Jamaat MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, and Principal Zahirul Islam, among others.
After the event, Nahid Islam declared Chittagong as a strong bastion of the NCP with the slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’.
