The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has selected 72,341 income tax returns for the 2023-24 tax year for audit through a completely automated system. This selection represents the second phase of the process and is based on Risk Based Audit Criterion.
The initiative aims to increase dynamics in revenue collection and ensure total transparency in the audit selection process. In the first phase, which took place in July ’25, 15,494 cases were selected for audit using a Random Selection method.
According to the NBR, specific criteria were followed to select a maximum of 200 and a minimum of 20 taxpayers for audit from each circle.
The board emphasised that there is no scope for manual intervention in this selection process, fulfilling a long-standing demand from taxpayers and civil society for a fully transparent system.
The list of Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) selected through this automated system has been published on the National Board of Revenue’s website.
The NBR stated that this automated process will not only ensure transparency and neutrality but will also play a vital role in achieving revenue targets.
