Spinner Nayeem Hasan has alleged that he was abducted and assaulted by people claiming to be members of the Detective Branch (DB) police in Chattogram on Thursday night.
The Bangladesh cricketer said the incident took place while he was returning home from Dhaka after playing in the Dhaka Premier League.
Speaking about the incident, Nayeem said his flight was delayed before he arrived in Chattogram and took a CNG from the airport. Around 11:25 pm, near the Lalkhan Bazar flyover, his vehicle was stopped by a group of men who identified themselves as police officers.
According to Nayeem, the men took the driver’s documents and approached him. He said he offered to let them check his bag if they had any concerns.
“I was playing in the Premier League and my flight was delayed. After arriving at the airport, I took a CNG and was on my way home. Around 11:25 pm, under the Lalkhan Bazar flyover, the police stopped my CNG and took the driver’s documents. I told the police, ‘You can check my bag if needed.’ One of them grabbed me by the throat and said, ‘Get in the vehicle,’ and forced me into their vehicle. I pushed my way out and said, ‘Why are you grabbing me by the throat?’ After that, they continued to grab me by the throat, beat me, and harassed me. Later, many people identified me and I showed them my ID card, but they still kept beating me,” Nayeem said.
The spinner became emotional while speaking to reporters and called for a proper investigation into the incident.
“This should not be taken normally. This should be investigated. Otherwise it will happen with normal people. If it happens to them, would you ever be there for them?” he said before breaking into tears.
The incident has sparked concern among cricket fans and members of the cricket community, with many calling for a swift and transparent investigation.
Nayeem is one of Bangladesh’s leading domestic spinners. He has taken 300 wickets in First-class cricket and 111 wickets in List A matches. He has also represented Bangladesh in international cricket and remains a regular performer in the domestic circuit.
