The United States welcomed the FIFA World Cup with a star-filled opening ceremony in Los Angeles on Friday before kicking off its campaign against Paraguay.
The event took place at Los Angeles Stadium, where giant screens displayed the famous Hollywood sign as a voice announced, “Welcome to the USA.” The ceremony reflected the city’s entertainment culture and brought a strong Hollywood feel to the tournament.
A marching band opened the show before musicians Future, Tyla, Anitta and K-pop star Lisa took the stage. The performances featured colourful costumes and designs inspired by Los Angeles street art and creative culture.
Actor Jason Sudeikis and singer Katy Perry were also part of the pre-match entertainment. Several famous faces attended the event, including Tom Cruise, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe, Owen Wilson and Paris Hilton. Performers danced around a giant World Cup trophy placed at the centre of the pitch.
Large golden FIFA letters hung from the roof of the 70,000-seat stadium. United States President Donald Trump did not attend the ceremony but spoke to the national team by phone before the match. He wished the players luck and said he believed they had a chance to go far in the tournament.
American supporters arrived in large numbers and created a lively atmosphere. Many wore costumes inspired by Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty and bald eagles. Paraguay also had strong backing, with many supporters waving flags inside the stadium.
The United States received a boost before kick-off as defender Chris Richards recovered from injury to start the match. Paraguay winger Julio Enciso also returned to the starting lineup after fitness concerns earlier in the week.
The United States became the third co-host nation to begin its World Cup journey. Earlier, Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the tournament. Canada also made history by earning its first World Cup finals point after drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
