An 8-year-old girl, Senjuti, has been found dead in a pond in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail, two days after she went missing.
Police recovered the body from the pond of the Upazila Parishad at around 8:30am on Monday.
The deceased Senzuti was the daughter of Falu Chandra Malu of Mandirpara area in Ward No. 7 of Sakhipur municipality. She was a Class Two student at Sakhipur Adarsha Shishu Kanon Pre-cadet School.
Family sources said Senjuti went missing on Saturday, 20 June, after 4pm. Relatives searched several areas but failed to trace her. Her father filed a general diary (GD) with Sakhipur police station that night.
Family members also claimed they received a phone call on Sunday night demanding Tk3 lakh as ransom in exchange for returning the child.
On Monday morning, locals spotted a child’s body floating in the Upazila Parishad pond and informed police.
The father, Falu Chandra Malu, said, “My little daughter has been killed and thrown into the pond. I want exemplary punishment for the killers.”
Sakhipur Police Station officer-in-charge Md Helal Uddin said, “Police recovered the body from the Upazila Parishad pond two days after she went missing.”
He added that the body has been sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
He said police are investigating the incident to uncover the exact circumstances. Legal proceedings are underway.
