Khairul Islam Shojib, son of Narayanganj‑3 MP Alhaj Azharul Islam Mannan, was released six hours after being taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office and questioned, police said.
Shojib, who was expelled as senior joint convener of Narayanganj district Jubo Dal, was handed over to his family around 1:30am Monday, confirmed Shafiqul Islam, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch.
Shafiqul told TIMES of Bangladesh that there were several written complaints against Shojib and there were intelligence reports, he added.
After questioning him on all matters, his statement was taken and he was released to his relatives around 1:30am.
“The allegations and his statement are being verified. He was not released under any pressure,” the DB chief added.
Narayanganj District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (DB) Hasinuzzaman said Shojib was detained and interrogated on the instructions of senior officials in view of the overall allegations.
He was taken from his residence in Dhaka’s Bashundhara residential area to the Narayanganj DB office and later handed over to Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch.
Most of the previous cases against Shojib have been withdrawn or settled, while he is on bail in the remaining ones. At present, there are no cases against him.
