At least three people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between two passenger buses on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Shibchar, Madaripur district, on Friday.
The accident occurred at around 3:30pm at the Panchchar Bakharerkandi area along the expressway.
The deceased include the driver’s assistant of a “Palki Paribahan” bus and two passengers of a “Hanif Paribahan” bus, though their full identities could not be immediately confirmed.
According to local sources, the Dhaka-bound Palki Paribahan bus, carrying passengers from Khulna, was parked on the roadside after suffering a tyre breakdown. A speeding Hanif Paribahan bus travelling from Barishal rammed into the stationary vehicle from behind.
Upon receiving information about the crash, personnel from the Bhanga Fire Service in Faridpur arrived at the scene, rescued the injured passengers, and admitted them to local clinics.
Bhanga Fire Service Station Officer Abu Jafar Sardar said that three people died on the spot, adding that the condition of one injured passenger remains critical.
Shibchar Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Muntasir Rahman said police recovered the bodies from the site and efforts are underway to identify the deceased.
Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-bound lane of the expressway came to a complete halt following the collision. Shibchar Highway Police subsequently arrived at the location and brought the traffic situation under control by around 5pm.
