Taylor Swift is set to release a new single, ‘Patient Zero’, on 25 September, giving fans a surprise musical release just days before the MTV Video Music Awards.
According to Billboard, the new track will arrive two days before Swift receives the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at this year’s ceremony. She is also nominated for nine awards, including video of the year and artist of the year.
Swift announced the song on Instagram on Tuesday, 22 September. Sharing a selfie, she wrote, “I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single, ‘Patient Zero,’ will be out on September 25.”
Fans can already pre-order the song through Swift’s official website. Acoustic and piano editions are also available, with each version featuring different cover art.
The release comes nearly a year after Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which arrived in October 2025. The new single follows the album and marks another release from the singer ahead of the 2026 VMAs.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on 27 September at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Swift will make history at the ceremony as the first recipient of the Artist Director Honors. The new award recognises artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and visual storytelling.
