Rayan’s stoppage-time header rescued Brazil from defeat as Carlo Ancelotti’s new era began with a 1-1 draw against Australia in Townsville.
The hosts looked set for a memorable victory after Nestory Irankunda put Australia ahead in the 69th minute. Brazil struggled to find a response, but Raphinha’s corner in the fifth minute of added time created the opening they needed.
Rayan rose above a crowded penalty area and powered his header towards goal. The ball bounced before finding the net, leaving goalkeeper Patrick Beach with no chance.
The result spared Brazil from defeat in Ancelotti’s first match of his latest spell in charge. The Italian had described the game as the start of a ‘new era’ after Brazil’s World Cup campaign ended in the last 16.
Australia were also looking to move on from their own disappointment after being eliminated in the last 32.
The hosts showed little fear from the opening whistle. Connor Metcalfe had the first notable opportunity after Australia won possession from Vinicius Junior, but his effort flew over the bar.
Brazil gradually settled into the game. Estevao cut inside from the right and shot wide, while Raphinha saw an effort deflected away.
Endrick then went down inside the box after a challenge from Lucas Harrington. VAR checked the incident, but Brazil were not awarded a penalty.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead shortly before half-time when Estevao and Endrick combined before the ball was put into the net. However, the goal was ruled out after Bruno Guimaraes was judged to have fouled Australia captain Harry Souttar.
Brazil continued to search for an opening after the break. Vinicius slipped while trying to meet Raphinha’s cross, before Raphinha sent another effort narrowly past the far post.
Australia then broke the deadlock.
Irankunda’s free-kick did not appear overly threatening, but Hugo Souza misjudged its flight and the ball ended up in the net.
Ancelotti responded with several substitutions, taking off Vinicius, Endrick and Estevao as Brazil pushed for an equaliser.
For much of the closing stages, Australia defended comfortably and Brazil failed to create a clear chance.
But with defeat almost certain, Raphinha’s corner found Rayan, whose late header changed the outcome and gave Brazil a share of the spoils.
