Miley Cyrus says she is ready to step into a new phase of her career, revealing that she wants to return to acting while also beginning a fresh musical journey after signing with Atlantic Records.
According to Variety, Cyrus has officially joined Atlantic Records after releasing two albums under Columbia Records, including Endless Summer Vacation, which featured her Grammy-winning global hit Flowers. She discussed her future plans while serving as guest editor of the latest issue of Wonderland magazine.
The issue brings together conversations with artists and public figures Cyrus admires, including Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Noah Cyrus, Kelela, Lykke Li, Sky Ferreira, 070 Shake, Towa Bird, Suzanne Vega, Tallulah Willis, Scout Willis, Phantogram and Model/Actriz.
In a conversation with actress and filmmaker Daryl Hannah, Cyrus reflected on music, creativity, growing up in the public eye and her hopes of returning to film.
Speaking about songwriting, she described music as something far beyond melody and lyrics.
“For me, a song isn’t just chords, melody, and lyrics. It’s a feeling,” she said. “It’s alive. It almost becomes its own little entity that tells you what it needs if you’re listening.”
She added that she enjoys working with collaborators who leave their egos behind and embrace experimentation.
“I love making records with people who aren’t precious about ideas. Everyone is there because they’re excited by the same thing. There’s no ego in the room when it’s working. Just curiosity.”
Asked what she enjoys most about creating music, Cyrus said making records helps her feel connected to her purpose.
“I love feeling aligned with my purpose, my power, and my gifts. I feel closest to something bigger than myself when records flow through me,” she said.
She described songwriting as an almost dreamlike experience.
“A new song can feel like I’ve already heard it before. Even if it isn’t finished yet, I somehow know exactly what it is, almost like I’m remembering it instead of creating it. That’s the mystery I love.”
Cyrus also revealed that she wants to return to acting and directing.
“Well… That’s partly why I wanted to get in touch. I’d genuinely love to do both,” she told Hannah. “My dream has always been to work with artists I admire, and you’re one of them. I think we’d make magic together, Daryl. I have an idea. Call me.”
When asked by make-up artist James Kaliardos what role she would most like to play on screen, Cyrus said she hopes to move away from darker stories.
“Violence is everywhere, and there’s a beauty in darkness, but I’d love to disappear into something deeply romantic,” she said.
“The kind of love we dream about, but with real stakes. A good old Shakespearean tragedy would be hot – a punk-rock Juliet. Something fierce and heartbreakingly romantic.”
