Two people were killed and another woman injured after a boundary wall collapsed behind Mirpur College in the capital’s Mirpur-2 area on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Salma Akter, 35, and Firoz, 41.
Md Rubel, who brought the victims to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said his mother-in-law, Rajia Begum, 45, a resident of Mirpur-10, had been standing in a queue behind Mirpur College to collect subsidised products from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) when the adjacent boundary wall collapsed on them.
He said local residents rescued the victims and initially took them to a nearby hospital. Rajia Begum was later transferred to DMCH, where she was admitted with a leg injury.
Rubel said Firoz had also been standing in the same queue. He was declared dead after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Later in the evening, Firoz’s wife, Shahida Akter, identified his body at the hospital.
Firoz was the son of Amjad Chowdhury of Khagurkari Hatiputa village in Naogaon Sadar upazila. He lived with his wife and two daughters in a tin-shed house in the Nawaberbag area of Mirpur-1.
Sub-Inspector Md Monirul Islam of Mirpur Model Police Station said Firoz’s identity had been confirmed through his national identity card, photograph and his wife’s statement.
He said the formalities for handing over the body were under way and that Rajia Begum remained admitted to the hospital.
The police officer added that Salma Akter, a resident of Janata Housing in Mirpur-2, died at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital following the incident.
