A mild cold wave is sweeping across the northern districts of Bangladesh, bringing biting cold and fog. The lowest temperature, 7.3 degrees Celsius, was recorded at Tetulia in Panchagarh at 9am on Sunday.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, a mild cold wave is prevailing over Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Jashore, Chuadanga, and the districts under Rangpur division, and it may continue. Moderate to dense fog may occur over river basins, while light to moderate fog is likely elsewhere.
Jitendra Nath Roy, acting officer at the Tetulia Weather Observation Center, said, “A moderate cold wave is sweeping Tetulia. Because of its proximity to the Himalayas, the intensity of winter is felt more strongly here. Temperatures may drop further in the coming days.”
Various areas of Panchagarh were seen almost deserted, as people avoided going outside unless necessary due to the biting cold. Many gathered at street corners and tea stalls, lighting fires to keep warm. Hospitals have also reported a rise in cold‑related patients, especially children and the elderly.
Anwar Hossain, a tea worker from Goyajhar in Sadar upazila, said, “We have to pluck tea leaves in the icy wind. Our hands and feet go numb, but we must keep working to earn a living.”
Van driver Nayon Ali said, “In this biting cold, taking the van out in the morning has become very difficult.”
