Sir Michael Caine may be coming out of retirement at 92 to rejoin Vin Diesel in ‘The Last Witch Hunter 2’, now fast-tracked at Lionsgate with Diesel’s One Race Films banner.
Though it has not been finalized, Caine is expected to reprise his role as Dolan, the priestly mentor who aided Diesel’s immortal warrior Kaulder in the 2015 fantasy adventure. The film, loosely inspired by Diesel’s own ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ campaigns, underperformed in the US with $27 million but earned $119 million overseas and has since found renewed life on digital platforms, including a strong run on Netflix this year.
“The film has grown into a global fan favourite, with audiences rediscovering it across every platform,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.
“The enduring enthusiasm made it clear that there’s an appetite for more stories set in this world. With Vin back, and new technology allowing us to expand the scope, this sequel is possible on an even bigger scale.”
If the deal closes, the project would mark Caine’s first feature since declaring his retirement in 2023 after ‘The Great Escaper’, citing limited roles for older actors. At the time, he said, “I might as well leave on a high. I’ve had wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?”
Nearly a decade later, The Last Witch Hunter is conjuring new life and possibly luring Caine back for one more battle alongside Diesel.
