Cruzeiro secured a 1-0 win over Atlético Mineiro in the Campeonato Mineiro final Monday (9 March) in Belo Horizonte, but the result barely mattered after a mass brawl erupted deep in stoppage time. The melee left 23 players red-carded, 12 from Cruzeiro and 11 from Atlético, marking a historic escalation of on-pitch violence in Brazilian senior football.

The chaos ignited when Atlético’s goalkeeper Everson rugby-tackled Cruzeiro midfielder Christian to the ground following a collision over a spilled ball. Everson pressed his knee into Christian and shouted, provoking an immediate reaction from Cruzeiro players. They surged at Everson, pushing him into the net, and the skirmish snowballed across the pitch.

Players kicked, punched, and shoved while substitutes and coaching staff joined the fray. The referee, Damian Rubino, opted to complete the match before issuing the red cards retrospectively. O Globo reported the melee lasted over a minute and involved almost everyone near the action.

Atlético Mineiro legend Hulk condemned the violence. “It’s regrettable, I have never seen violence like that in any football game,” he said. “We cannot set that example because it ends up having repercussions all around the world.” His words underline how explosive local rivalries can damage football’s reputation internationally.

Cruzeiro coach Tite thanked fans despite the chaos. “I want to convey to the Cruzeiro fans the affection and respect I have for them,” he said. “I may lack competence at times, but respect for the fans, the work, the dignity, the honesty, that’s what counts.” The victory and the unprecedented card haul will dominate headlines, but both sides now face disciplinary scrutiny ahead of next season.
