A man posing as a doctor was detained by Ansar members at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday afternoon after nurses became suspicious of his identity.
The man, identified as Rakib Hossain, 25, was detained in front of the emergency department’s operating theatre.
According to senior nurses who witnessed the incident, Rakib arrived outside operating theatre No 4 with a stethoscope around his neck and asked them about the whereabouts of a doctor.
When the nurses on duty questioned his identity, he claimed to be a physician in the medicine department of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
However, his attire and behaviour raised further suspicions. The nurses then asked him to read a patient’s prescription, but he failed to do so and subsequently claimed to be a nurse.
He was also unable to provide the name or address of his nursing college when questioned further. The nurses then handed him over to Ansar members on duty.
Mohammad Habibur Rahman, inspector and in-charge of the Dhaka Medical Police Camp, said the hospital director instructed police to take the man into custody after he was detained by Ansar members.
He was later handed over to Shahbagh Police Station for legal action, Habibur Rahman added.
According to the inspector, the man identified himself as Rakib Hossain. He is the son of Faruk Hossain and hails from Gouranadi upazila of Barishal. He currently lives in Savar, Dhaka.
His brother is reportedly admitted to the hospital.
