The Chattogram Bandar Rokkha Sangram Parishad has postponed its planned indefinite hunger strike, scheduled to begin on Monday, following discussions with the shipping minister and state minister on Sunday.
The organisation had announced the programme demanding cancellation of the lease agreement for the New Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port and guarantees of job security for port workers and employees.
Md Ibrahim Khokon, coordinator of the Chattogram Bandar Rokkha Sangram Parishad, confirmed the decision, saying it followed a meeting with the minister and state minister at the Shipping Ministry on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to TIMES, Khokon said they had given positive assurances regarding the organisation’s demands, prompting it to postpone the planned hunger strike.
The indefinite hunger strike was announced on 12 October during a mass hunger strike held in front of the port’s One-Stop Service building.
Khokon clarified that the Parishad had not withdrawn its ongoing movement but had temporarily suspended the planned programme in light of the government’s assurances.
He said the organisation would hold a meeting soon to decide its next course of action and formally inform the media of any further decisions.
