Police have arrested a leader of the banned Chhatra League, identified as Tanvir Jomaddar, on charges of tailing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during a footpath inspection in Mirpur, Dhaka.
A team from Mirpur Model Police Station arrested him during an operation in the Mirpur area on Wednesday. Tanvir is the vice-president of Mirzaganj Upazila Chhatra League in Patuakhali.
Confirming the arrest, Md Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, said that the Chhatra League leader followed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman when he visited Mirpur to inspect footpaths on Saturday.
He added that Tanvir was arrested following the verification of video footage of the incident, and legal proceedings are currently underway.
On Saturday, Tarique inspected cleared footpaths in the Mirpur-10 roundabout area. Tanvir was present at the site alongside political party leaders and activists, and he allegedly attempted to get close to the prime minister by following him during the inspection.
A 33-second video of the incident subsequently spread on Facebook, prompting law enforcement members to identify Tanvir and take steps to arrest him.
The viral video shows Tanvir following the prime minister while bypassing police, officials from Dhaka North City Corporation, and local BNP leaders and activists in the Mirpur-10 roundabout area.
At one point, he left others behind and managed to get close to the prime minister.
